Dementia, Aged care and Well-ness

This last couple of weeks seems to have been getting information about the meaning of Well-ness, and how it applies to people in aged and dementia care, a worthy topic for my blog. The three sets of questions below come directly from the PDF in the Dementia Care News blog, Measuring Wellbeing: Practitioners’ Guide (NEF). It is fascinating, and I decided to add the link to the PDF as it is available for anyone online via the site. It would be fascinating to ask my friends in residential aged care these questions.

In fact, if you asked your clients in aged care (those of you working there) I would be very interested to know the results. Ask yourself what you think their answers might be, based on how you would feel if you were living their lives, and then think some more about your answer. Are the meaningful activities you provide really that meaningful and engaging (usually very ‘bright’ loud speaking staff, loud music, overcrowded rooms, too many residents at one time, meaningless activities)?  Food for thought, as always, and I challenge everyone working in aged and dementia care to ask their residents these questions. And if they can’t or don’t want to answer them, ask the close family members to complete them on their behalf.
