When home at my parents home for Christmas, I found a copy of The Vows on the fridge, given to my mother in the last few years by my father. There was not a lot of openly displayed affection in our home when I was a child; it was not that there was no love, we were all too busy working on the farm. However, in retirement, my parents have had time to be more open with their love for each other, and it is beautiful to witness. I dread to think how the one left behind will cope when one of them dies…
These vows work for my husband and I too; we have made a permanent home in our heart for each other. I had to kiss a few toads to find this love, but it was worth it!! Regardless of your status in life, I hope there is someone you can apply this to, maybe a beloved parent, a best friend, or if you are lucky enough, to a partner in love.
The vows
I love you today, you are my best friend;
Today I give myself to you in marriage.
I promise to always cherish, respect and encourage you;
I promise to love you in good times and in bad;
I promise to wipe away your tears with my laughter,
and your pain with my caring and compassion.
I will always be the one you can trust, talk to,
and the one who will always understand;
I will make my home in your heart;
These promises I give to you today and
For the rest of our lives.
