Amazed by Angels

Amazed… I managed to upgrade from a free blog to my own Domain name, Kate Swaffer earlier this week. It has taken me months to get the nerve to do it, and emails to girlfriends, and to the WordPress Support Team, and at long last, I have paid up and done it! I was terrified all my blogs would somehow disappear, and my readers would get lost somewhere out there in cyberspace too, but no, so far, absolutely nothing like this has happened. Almost daily someone new subscribes, or ‘Likes’ one of my blogs, they are people from all over the world, poets, and rappers, and artists, and chefs, and journalists. Then there are the mums and dads and sons and wives or husbands who are effected by dementia in some way; and writers, and most importantly, readers. Reading was my favourite hobby, one I loved to do and a holiday with me usually meant a book a day or at least every two days. Boring for others perhaps, but wonderful for me. I still read, but I don’t remember much of what I read, so I take notes, copious amounts of notes, filling up lovely little note books with patterned covers, showing themselves to me when I can’t find the information inside my head.  I feel honoured and humbled to have people reading my blog, and it makes me feel deeply resolved to continue to write. Thank you.

Yesterday I managed to complete and lodge my articles for the London conference publication, with lots of support from Dear Husband and a young uni buddy to remind me how to reference properly, and to make sure I was adhering to the Submission guidelines; and the very basic endnote method became my best friend, one we were never allowed to use when I was studying! My dear friend Jac sent me lots of email support too xx. Tonight we have a dress rehearsal for my Adelaide Fringe events; I have found musicians to support me at short notice, wonderful friends who have either known me through my children, or through my hospitality business, offering me their support and musical talent. My young son sent out a ‘red alert’ on Facebook for one, and I went through my old business card folder to find the other. Both methods worked, the old and the new, which was wonderful to see as it is easy to feel we can only manage through the use of modern technology!

Last night, my Dear Husband drew a picture with a word bubble that said I could pull miracles out of my arse, and that once he did not believe in Angels, but after yesterday, he does! One of my Angels is called  Sophia, and she is always with me, sitting on my shoulder, always helping me find my way, showing me love. She helps friends too, and many of my Angel-believing friends often enjoy her wonderful support; all they have to do is ask. I have believed in angels for a long time, and have an old Indian Angel too, who wears a big feather head dress. He heals and protects, whereas Sophia more actively helps and supports, and shows me the way. My kids think this is weird, my husband did too until yesterday, but it is not really important to me what anyone else thinks about my belief in Angels. They are most definitely a part of my team!

  1. Funny, Kate, I’ve been dithering too about changing to my own domain name, and for the same reasons. Maybe now you’ve got up the courage and I still received your blog in my mailbox this morning I’ll get down to it too!

  2. as nurses we are taught the science of the body, life and death. No one ever taught us the sience of Angels. We all know they exist, many a time sitting holding a hand till one passes or battling in the operating theatre to assist saving a life, no matter the trauma at the end is always peace. It descends upon all who were there and we all know they are the angels offering comfort to the assistants and guidance to the deceased. When we are alive they are among us, they are the tiny flicker in the corner of your eye, the person you think you see or feel when nothing is there. The strength in some dark times, then there are living angels and at different stages in our lives we are them and then we rely on them.
