Kia Ora and Farewell New Zealand

It has been a privilege to be a visitor in this beautiful country, and to have met so many wonderful ‘Kiwis’ or New Zealanders.  You might be slightly behind Australia and some other western countries with regard to policy, for example Dementia is not yet a public health priority, but throughout my time here, it sounds and feels like you are ahead of the pack , second only to Scotland, with walking the talk of person centred care for people with dementia, for which I applaud you loudly… pakipaki. The staff at Alzheimer’s New Zealand and the various Alzheimer’s organisations in each city is doing a mammoth job considering their lack of funding. The Neurological Foundation is funded completely through donations and bequests, yet providing an amazing service and research centre. They are launching a campaign later this year with very limited funds, but with a passion that is inspiring. Their media are interested in dementia, and appear to be giving them air time proportionate to the dementia epidemic that we are told is on its way. Their recent conference brought together a lot of speakers, and although on different pages or sides of the coin, were all passionate about improving the lives of those living with dementia, and the environment and funding for families, researchers and workers looking after people with dementia. I have been to Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, and feel like I have been ‘home’ in all three cities. Thank you for having me, and for looking after me in this last very difficult week during my families’ time of loss. A special thank you to the beautiful lady in Christchurch who sang a Waiata Māori, meaning ‘with grateful thanks’. It was very moving and I felt honoured and privileged to have received this incredible gift. Kia Ora.

  2. Sadly I had to leave Kate in New Zealand for Dad. I just thought that I would add my thanks to Kate’s. So to the many people I meet in my limited time in your beautiful country I say thank you and see you soon. Kia Ora.

    • Thank you Phil. I suggest to start with, go to the Dementia page, and most of it is on there. When I return to Adelaide, I’ll send you more of it. All the very best wishes.
