Forgetting a name

Hmm, where to start? I was having coffee this morning about the educational video I’ll be starring in, and recalled an incident that happened to me recently. It didn’t seem that funny at the time, but has caused quite a sensation and a lot of laughs since, and my guests inspired me to write about it. I have been volunteering in a nursing home coffee shop for almost a year, and have come to know and love many of the residents. Recently whilst making and serving coffee, I had a facial recognition memory lapse moment!  This gentleman came to the counter, and I accidentally called him by someone else’s name, and asked how he was as he didn’t look well. After his reply, I then inquired after his ‘wife’, who had been unwell on and off for a few weeks. He gave me an odd look, then answered ‘she died’. I was very sympathetic, and then after he left when I was washing some dishes, another volunteer noticed me crying. Naturally she asked what was wrong. I mentioned that this man’s wife had died and as I was fond of them both, felt quite upset. This lady then said ‘I’ve been all over the place this morning, and have not heard she had died; let me go and ask the office staff who it is’. With this, she raced off to find out who had died. Of course, no-one living in the nursing home had died, so then they decided it must have been one of the residents’ whose wife still lived independently. The staff continued their search for the name of the dead person for most of the day. At about 10pm that evening, and much to my horror, I realised I had mixed up the name of who I was speaking to!!! The next day when I apologised to the gentleman in question, he replied, ‘yes, I did think you’d mixed me up. My wife died 5 years ago!’ And so you see, this is what happens on some of my days.
