Why?

Why? Why? Why? (Or Why not?) When your children are young, this is the question you hear many times a day.  It is for me, perhaps the most profound question in the world. I encouraged my children to question everything, to always ask about stuff. I even suggested they always ask for what they wanted, as there would then be a 50/50 chance of getting the answer they wanted! One son in particular took me up on this advice, and many times drove me nuts! There was one night, perhaps in memory of a Shrove Tuesday that he begged me for pancakes so much. I kept saying no, and he kept saying But why not? and it has become a family joke. All we have to say to each other is pancakes and we all laugh. There were times when I would ask my children what part of the word NO don’t you understand? and they would come back to me with a very rational question, why? So why is it most of the time we feel the need to be right? Why don’t we like being wrong? Why does the sky look blue? Why do we feel sad when someone dies? Why do we feel happy when we are in the flush of new love? Why does this not last for very long? Why do we get married? Why do we get divorced? Why do we feel defensive when someone questions us? Why am I writing this blog? Why is anyone reading it? Why do we live? Why do we die? What is the point to life? Although why is rather a profound word, it seems to me the best thing to do is just get on and live, as well as we can, with as much integrity and joy as we can muster. Why? Well, why not!

  1. Two of the best questions – “Why?” & “Why not?”, Kate. Eternal and profound.
The search for meaning is a visceral urge – one that drives each of us forward.
But … is there always an answer? Is it always rational?
I kinda like Pete’s reflection – search as we might, sometimes there is no more rational answer than, “Just because.”
While, ‘Why?’ is not one of the 14 unanswerable questions, maybe there’s an answer to be found in a little Noble Silence.
    Simple questions. Many answers.

  2. I really liked this. As simple as it is it seems to me a question I haven’t asked myself often enough. Why do I love you, because I want to. Yours forever, Pete xxx
