Denial is the escape route we take when we distort, disguise or refuse to acknowledge a situation or refuse to recognise or accept the existence of something we don’t wish to face or accept. In the state of denial we persuade ourselves that the particular stress, event or thing we are facing doesn’t exist, and as a consequence, therefore, there is nothing to cope with! Like most escape mechanisms, denial is a defence mechanism, an escape or defence against fear; the fear of not being able to deal with or face a situation that either has occurred, or is likely to occur in the future. My world is currently awash with people I love living in denial, and my not being able to help them is my current larger than life lesson. Love is all there is to offer, all they will accept, and as always, love is and has to be enough.

Your lesson Kate is one of the most difficult for many reasons. There IS nothing you can do but offer love. It is so hard to sit by and watch someone make mistakes, fail or worse, die…Those journeys are part of their life lessons, part of who they are. To interfere would alter their prechosen journey and so we must sit on our hands and bite our tongues, but at the same time offer our love. It is a lesson to learn from, however, for you, and you will grow from it. Good luck! VK
