The brain, its untapped potential and dementia

Super Brain: Unleashing the Explosive Power of Your Mind to Maximize Health, Happiness, and Spiritual Well-Being  A manual for relating to the brain in a revolutionary new way, Super Brain shows you how to use your brain as a gateway for achieving health, happiness, and spiritual growth. The authors are two pioneers: bestselling author and physician Deepak Chopra and Harvard Medical School professor Rudolph E. Tanzi, one of the world’s foremost experts on the causes of Alzheimer’s. They have merged their wisdom and expertise for a bold new understanding of the “three-pound universe” and its untapped potential.
In contrast to the “baseline brain” that fulfills the tasks of everyday life, Chopra and Tanzi propose that, through a person’s increased self-awareness and conscious intention, the brain can be taught to reach far beyond its present limitations. “We are living in a golden age for brain research, but is this a golden age for your brain?” they ask.
Super Brain explains how it can be, by combining cutting-edge research and spiritual insights, demolishing the five most widespread myths about the brain that limit your potential, and then showing you methods to:
– Use your brain instead of letting it use you
– Create the ideal lifestyle for a healthy brain
– Reduce the risks of aging
– Promote happiness and well-being through the mind-body connection
– Access the enlightened brain, the gateway to freedom and bliss
– Overcome the most common challenges, such as memory loss, depression, anxiety, and obesity
Your brain is capable of incredible healing and constant reshaping. Through a new relationship with your brain you can transform your life. In Super Brain, Chopra and Tanzi guide you on a fascinating journey that envisions a leap in human evolution. The brain is not just the greatest gift that Nature has given us. It’s the gateway to an unlimited future that you can begin to live today. (Source for image and description of book: Amazon.com)
This is what I call another ‘must read’, to add to the books on brain and mind and heart health, especially for people diagnosed with dementia. Also available on Kindle or iBooks November 6th. Thanks as always to Dob De Marco from the Alzheimer’s Reading Room for bringing it to my attention.

  1. There may not be a cure for dementia but the way you and Richard tackle living with dementia with a positive attitude asking no more than people still treat you as a human being is to be admired.

    Congratulations to both of you.

The word hero is abused and misused in todays society but you are both heroes whose efforts will hopefully contribute to a change in the way people treat people living with dementia.

  2. Hello I’m not sure they can provide the road map for a “super brain” but they do offer some good general advice for any growing older who wants to maximize their cognitive potential. This over hypes a simple truth, if you don’t use it you lose it. This is true both slightly below and quite a bit higher than where most older people wear their belts. This is not a cure or a preventive for dementia, although there is promise this intensity of activity may delay the apparent onset of symptoms in some folks. At least this is what I think.

    • Hello Richard. As you rightly say, they do not provide a CURE for dementia, but no-one else does either!! However this book may help some on the road of non pharmacological, positive psychosocial interventions and holisitc and healthy choices people make to delay symptoms, or even help prevent the onset of diseases inlcuding dementia. Every small positive step we take to help ourselves is worthwhile, at least in my opinion, and as always, what works for one, might not work for another. With love and hope, Kate
