I probably written about one of my other blogs, but my recipe website In The Kitchen has slowly been developing. I’ve now started to transfer the daily recipe I post on this site on the In The Kitchen page where Kick off 2012 Project 366 has been happening since January 1st, onto the new site. This will make it much easier for you to find a recipe as all you’ll need to do is hit the Category Cloud heading. There are almost 300 recipes on this site, and I’ve now transferred 39 onto the new one. Food is centre stage in our lives, and our family has always loved cooking and eating, and spending time together doing both. It is nurturing and healing to our hearts, souls and physical bodies.
Thomas Edison wrote, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in my cognitive health, and significant difference in my general health since removing all processed sugar and almost all bad fats and added salt from my diet. An added bonus is my arthritis pain has reduced by almost 50%, and I’m having much less difficulty using my hands because of it. It does mean giving up the occasional glass of wine and also makes it quite challenging to eat out, but for me it is 100% worth it.
Yesterday I spent time with a friend whose husband died a few weeks ago from younger onset dementia. His initial prognosis was poor, and she believes through a very healthy regime of omitting sugar, fat, salt and gluten from his diet, he was able to live a much better quality of life for longer. He also engaged in neuroplasticity, meditation, and a host of other non pharmacological and positive psychosocial interventions to prolong his life, and increase his well-being. No, it didn’t cure him, but they had 8 great years together where he was doing well, before he deteriorated. When he was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 3 months before he died, the medical doctors could not believe he had lived so well, and for so long. More anecdotal evidence these interventions work!!

This is a picture of my Tira Mi Su Cheesecake, developed for my Cafe Cake clients about 12 years ago. It was a big seller, and I’ll add the recipe to both sites in the next few days. Of course, it is not dementia friendly, and I won’t ever eat it again except on a very special occasion, but that is not to say you won’t enjoy it!

Some forms of dementia involve compulsive eating if their hypothalamus has been affected (it has with my neurological disease, so I’m hungry 24/7, irrespective of having eaten 1 minute ago)
So in these instances you have to lock up the cupboards so that the person won’t go around constantly looking for food, despite having eaten only moments ago…….

It was about 1 year after diagnosis that I was finally able to change. My mother was always tellling me not to eat etc and so I thought “I’ll show her ….. I won’t eat anything bad until the rest of the week” ……. then it became another week …….. then a month ……then …. etc. So it’s been about 14 years no biscuits, cakes, fried food, oily good etc. And now I’m so PROUD that you couldn’t even pay me to eat anything ‘bad’ ……. or maybe with about $1 million you might 😉 And I ended up doing the same with exercise …… and now I exercise each day …… even if it’s only for 10 minutes.
So it’s PRIDE in myself that keeps me motivated
Oh today it’s the 15 year anniversary of my diagnosis …… I was a few days into my hospital stay when they finally diagnosed me. I’ve actually spent longer being a sick adult than a healty adult. On well.
