This is another re-blog, but an important one to any readers in Victoria, and I have copied the complete article published in DPS News, Thursday, 15 th November 2012 in Health & Wellness, Aussie drug may ‘reverse’ Alzheimer’s;
“An opportunity to “stop Alzheimer’s disease in its tracks” may lie in a Victorian study to trial an Australian drug believed to help in combating dementia.
Melburnians living with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease are invited to apply to participate in the study.
The study’s coordinator, Associate Professor Michael Woodward, the Head of Aged Care for Austin Health, says anyone over the age of 55 years who has mild Alzheimer’s disease – and is accessible to Melbourne – is able to apply.
Dr Woodward claims the drug targets the protein amyloid which is the known cause of Alzheimer’s.
“We think this drug actually breaks down the toxic effects of amyloid that actually seems to be the cause of Alzheimer’s disease,” he says.
“This is an opportunity to actually stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks or even to reverse the process.”
Two thirds of participants in the trial will receive the drug, with the other third receiving a placebo.
The drug has reportedly been developed in Australia and is now also being researched in Australia
