I’m adding the latest e-newsletter from the Dulwich Centre, highlighting the many events and activities about Narrative Therapy coming to Adelaide next year. I recently did a 5 day introductory Narrative Therapy course with them, and was surprised to find people from all over the world had flown in especially to attend, from countries including Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA. It is for this reason, I wanted to blog their latest newsletter, as there may be readers out there who would be interested in attending one of the events, especially as some tie in with WOMADelaide sensational world music festival!), Adelaide Festival and Fringe Festival.

3. Pre-conference and post-conference workshops and events
In order to make the most of your time in Adelaide you might also be interested in these workshops/events:
· Narrative responses to bedwetting when children are living in contexts of fear – a Free workshop with Dulwich Centre Foundation
· Narrative Therapy One Week Pre-Conference Intensive
· WOMADelaide (sensational world music festival!)
· Adelaide Festival and Fringe Festival
4. Volunteers teaching in Uganda with Dulwich Centre Foundation International
Caleb Wakhungu, from Mt Elgon Self-Help Community Project, and Loree Stout and Kendra Lutes (volunteering on behalf of Dulwich Centre Foundation International) recently conducted narrative training in Kampala with participants coming from different organisations under the umbrella of Global Coalition of Women Against Aids Uganda. All the participants are working in the area of HIV and some have lived with HIV for over 20 years and are involved at both national and international forums on HIV and Aids. The workshop went extremely well! Earlier this year Amanda Worrall also volunteered to support an earlier training event. Thank you Loree, Kendra and Amanda (all of whom are past graduates of our International training program)! We are delighted to continue our partnership with Caleb Wahkungu and the Mt Elgon Self-Help Community Project. For more information about the way narrative ideas are being used to spark and sustain local social action and economic projects click here (or come to the conference in March as Caleb will be joining us!)
5. One year program in narrative therapy 2013
It’s possible to combine the conference experience in March with a one year introductory course in narrative therapy! This involves three parts. Part I involves attending the 5-day pre-conference Level 1 intensive in narrative therapy, a day with a Dulwich Centre Faculty member, and the conference in March. Part II involves participating in an on-line reading, writing and learning program. Part III involves returning to Adelaide for a Level 2 intensive (with Jill Freedman, USA) and two extra days with members of Dulwich Centre Faculty in November. This program costs $2450. Register here. This program will also count as fulfilling the pre-requisites to enter the Masters Program that we hope will be running from 2014 (see below).
6. Fundraising acknowledgements
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the following people who arranged a fundraising event for Dulwich Centre Foundation recently: Anne Stringer, Adam Hahs, Milan Colic and the Melbourne narrative therapy community. We’d also like to acknowledge faculty and participants who recently attended the International Congress on Narrative Responses to Trauma that took place in Ramallah, a number of whom have given substantial donations to support narrative practice in Palestine. It’s a bit hard to describe what it means when these folks and others support the work of the Foundations and local projects in this way. Thank you!
7. International Journal of Narrative Therapy and Community Work 3rd issue for 2012 launched!
The latest issue of the International Journal of Narrative Therapy and Community Work has now been launched. It’s a very interesting collection and includes papers focusing on work in Hong Kong, Kurdistan (Iraq), USA, Australia and New Zealand! Part One focuses on narrative therapy with young people. In particular, these two papers explore ways of enabling young people who are attending counselling to link their lives with, and make contributions to, other young people. Part Two consists of a publication entitled ‘Responding to survivors of torture and suffering: Survival skills of Kurdish families’ which is the result of a partnership between Kirkuk Center for Torture Victims in Iraq and Dulwich Centre Foundation International. Part Three includes two papers that build bridges between narrative therapy and other approaches. A paper from New Zealand explores how narrative practices can be used to accompany strengths-based approaches. And a paper from the USA makes links between Buddhist/mindfulness perspectives and narrative therapy approaches to trauma. This journal concludes with explorations from Hong Kong about how teaching exercises and games can be used to introduce concepts of poststructuralism that inform narrative practice. This journal is now on-line, meaning that people from very diverse contexts can access it and we can keep the subscription rate low ($39). We hope you will become a member of Dulwich Centre and a reader of this journal!
8. 12 months of online FREE ‘Friday Afternoons at Dulwich Centre’
There are now 21 free video presentations on our Friday Afternoon at Dulwich site which have been downloaded by thousands of practitioners from many countries. In recognition of the one year anniversary, we’ve asked Amanda Worrall (who offered the first online video) to share more of her work. This month Amanda offers ‘When your child is diagnosed with schizophrenia: The skills and knowledge of parents’. This thought-provoking and moving presentation continues our determination to foster conversations that can contribute to changing the ‘mental health’ system. Friday afternoon videos are placed on www.narrativetherapyonline.com on the last Friday of every month. Coming soon … Vikki Reynolds from Canada!
9. Level 2 Intensive with Jill Freedman
We’re pleased to announce that Jill Freedman (USA) will be visiting Dulwich Centre in November 2013 to offer a Level II intensive training. For more information see: http://www.dulwichcentre.com.au/narrative-therapy-one-week-training.html#two
10. Next steps in on-line courses … asking for your suggestions
Well, we’ve certainly learnt that on-line narrative therapy courses are popular and that they can provide access to narrative ideas to participants from a great diversity of regions … from Arnhem Land in the far north of Australia to Spain, Alaska, Switzerland, USA, UK, Canada, South Africa, Israel, the Republic of Moldova, Brazil, Hong Kong, and Mexico. At present, there are two courses available : ‘Externalising conversations’ and ‘Re-membering and reclaiming lives from abuse’. To learn more about these two courses, and/or to register, go to www.narrativetherapyonline.com and follow the instructions you will find there (each course costs AUD$99). Now we’re starting to work on the next courses and we would really appreciate your suggestions. We’ve had a lot of requests for a Tree of Life course, but we’re also thinking of courses on re-authoring conversations, the use of therapeutic documents, responding to trauma … If you have particular ideas or suggestions can you please let us know? Thank you!
