Shoes, finger buns and dementia…

Bally shoesAged about 4, my youngest son said; “Mummy, what is it with you and shoes!!!” This was after yet another visit to a shoe shop, not necessarily to purchase any, but to drool over them. My middle name could well have been Imelda, as I do love shoes. I really dislike almost all other shopping, but shoes (and watches) do it for me, and especially shoes. Since My Arthritis entered my world, I am having trouble wearing anything but the most boring looking shoes, and flats. I have given away many of my shoes, some I purchased after falling in love with them, but then have not been able to wear. Even the lowest of heels are a problem, and anything with a lace or zipper across the top of the foot.

Finger bunsWhen I gave up sugar and bad fats in July this year, I longed for a finger bun, buttered with real butter for weeks! The value of not eating sugar in particular has completely removed any craving I had for sugar, and especially a finger bun or chocolate. Thankfully!! I no longer even remotely long for a glass of wine, or a dessert of any kind other than fresh fruit or plain yoghurt, the benefits have been so profound. But the longing for shoes has not gone away. Entering a shoe shop now feels like I once did about not eating chocolate or finger buns. There is almost a desperation as my addiction can no longer be satisfied, and I am hoping the positive benefits of having dementia eventually allows me to forget my love and longing for beatiful shoes!!

  1. That reminds me of what I’m like with any other clothes other dan very comfortable and soft tracksuit pants. Since all clothing is painful for me (except some very loose and light clothing) I don’t even know what’s in fashion! It sure saves me a lot of money …… 😉

And shoes? I’m like you and can only wear a few types.

And like you I had to go through my wardrobe and give away all my “pre-encephalitis” clothing – lots of designer clothes and Country Road etc.

Eventually it will “hurt” you less ….. if doesn’t really affect me anymore.

  2. I know what you mean about having a penchant for beautiful shoes. I once had two pairs of divine Charles Jourdan shoes: one pr in fine strappy red patent with heels that were a menace if you were vertical; the other pair were black suede with low chunky perspex heals and a perspex heart on the top — I loved them prob more than my boyfriend! Actually I fell down so often in impossible shoes that I learned to carry a pr of flats in my handbag. Now with a bunion that could be a tourist attraction, the foot challenged have very slim pickings: velcro closures and rubber soles — eerrk!
