A night at the Opera

Teatra la Scala

For almost my whole life I had dreamed of attending an opera at Teatro alla Scala , and in 2011, we were there. It wasn’t an opera, but a modern ballet as it was the only performance available the time we were there, but it was enough. Just being there was enough. I have little memory of what the performance was about, and perhaps I can recall it was modern ballet and not opera simply because back then I didn’t especially enjoy modern ballet! But thankfully I can recall the feelings I had arriving inside the theatre, and the overwhelming emotional response of tears and pure bliss and joy. This one night at the Opera was and is enough.

And if you were wondering if this blog was going to be about the Marx brothers movie, A night at the Opera, I apologise! Well, maybe you are glad??!! The Marx brothers are still my all time favourite movie stars and comedians, and Duck Soup is still at the top of my list of funny movies.

Harpo was my favourite brother, and I’ve recently decided if and when the symptoms of dementia ultimately mean I can no longer talk, I will get a horn!!

Ps. I’m still keeping up with the April National Poem Writing Month challenge of a poem for 30 days; you might like to check out todays, Intelligent life?

  1. Lucky you! I’ve always wanted to go to La Scala. We thought of going last year but in the end there wasn’t anything we really wanted to see. One day. We both love opera but living where we do it’s not easy to indulge our passion. If you want to see a really good opera in the comfort of your own home, I can thoroughly recommend Joseph Losey’s film version of Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi, Edda Moser, Kiri te Kanawa). Just brilliant and possibly my favourite film of all time. Available on DVD now, I’m sure (we have an old video version).

    • Oh yes, going to La Scala was truly spectacular and a highlight of my whole life; I do hope you manage to get there one day. And thanks for the tip, I will try and get a copy of the film version of Don Giovanni. Enjoy your weekend Vanessa.
