Beyond 2020: Australian National Disability Strategy

HAVE YOUR SAY IN AUSTRALIA: Consultation on the National Disability Strategy for beyond 2020

The Commonwealth Government is consulting with people with disability about the new national disability strategy which will replace the current one that ends in 2020. It’s all about creating a more inclusive society that enables people with disability to fulfil their potential as equal citizens, and the Strategy will help to guide governments and other organisations to build the wellbeing of people with disability and their carers.

There has been a lot of change to disability policy and service delivery since the current Strategy started in 2011. A recent independent review has shown that many parts of the current strategy are working well and the Strategy’s overall principles and goals are valuable and important. However, the review also showed there are still areas for improvement, particularly on how the strategy is implemented.

The new strategy needs to reflect the changing policy environment and build on opportunities available today, as well as what may emerge over the next decade.

Throughout this year there will be a number of ways that people with disability and the broader community can have their say about modernising the disability policies and programs that affect their lives.

Workshops are being held in South Australia with one in Adelaide in 21 May and another in Berri on 23 May.

Sign up to attend one of these face-to-face community workshops by visiting the Department of Social Services Engage website (or type in https://engage.dss.gov.au/a-new-national-disability-strategy-for-beyond-2020/ and click the “register your interest” button).
