Finding a new language

‘When your child is no longer a child, you will have to find a new language’ (Karin Fossum, 2003, Don’t look back, p. 108). This seems eminently true, yet quite difficult to do. Perhaps this is because the role of parent is so strong, and the desire to protect and guide your child takes over from your ability to treat them as equals. It is not that you don’t consider them contemporaries, just your role is so ingrained. I strive for new ways to communicate with my two sons, ways that still show my unconditional parental love, but that also show unconditional acceptance for the adults they are becoming. It is not up to me to tell them how to live their lives, only to love them, become friends with them, and through my own actions, in some small way, show them the way.
