Firstly some of you might ask, what is a Walkman? For you really young readers, it is the original version of the iPod or MP3 player… Ok, you now might ask, What do Walkmans have to do with change? Many years ago when the Walkman arrived in Australia, I felt it was the height of rudeness to wander around in public, or sit with your family or friends with the earplugs in. It seemed unforgivably impolite to my way of thinking, and I used to get really annoyed about it. Such a waste of my time and energy, but back then, I had no idea there was so much change ahead! A year or so after it came to Australia, I was sitting in a waiting room (probably annoyed I had to wait!?), and read an article about why they were developed in the first place. I vaguely recall it was in Japan, and they were invented to give people who lived in deeply clustered housing a sense of personal space. How cool is that I thought, and immediately changed my mind about them, which also stopped me feeling annoyed and negative every time I saw them being used in public places. In fact back then, I used to get annoyed about so many things; really simple things too, just things that in some way didn’t match my way of thinking or my belief system at a particular time in my life. And as I have grown older and a little wiser (?), it seems to me the less we struggle with different views and opinions, or someone else’s right to do things the way they see fit, the less negative we will feel or be. Wasting emotions and time on being angry with someone or something is such a total waste of time. If you don’t like something, and you can change it, then be part of the solution and DO IT NOW, and if you can’t change or fix it, FORGET IT. I constantly say to myself, step in and do something constructive or useful if something someone does or says is truly offensive or hurts you, and leave it alone if the only person it is negatively affecting is you.

I hope as I grow older I will become more open-minded instead of more close-minded.

Such a wise comment… I do see many older people getting more set in their ways, so also hope I can avoid that by working on being open-minded as I see it making them so stressed.

And what I always think is that I am really harming myself and my little cells by getting upset at people and things, because they rarely know that I am upset, so it’s only really affecting me!
