Dementia: My Story

The following short digital story is on YouTube, and the link to it is also somewhere on my blog. I produced it for a university course not long after my diagnosis of dementia. It is not meant to be Ageist; when my father in law saw it, he felt exactly the same. It is not meant to be negative about aged care. It is not necessarily how I feel about going into aged care now. It is how I felt at the time, and the thought of going into aged care, aged 53, is still rather daunting. My husband says he will NEVER place me into aged care, but hey, I have seen and worked with what is around our particular corner, so one never knows.

  1. Kate, I dread the day you ever decide not to continue posting your thoughts, your insight and your record of living with dementia. Your honesty is exactly what Is needed. I wish I could borrow you and ‘use’ you to train staff, carers and family members. You are quite unique, it’s an honour to be given the chance to read the things you post. Thank you.

    • Thank you Clare… I have a training video already produced by another organisation which they use for staff training, but I’m not 100% happy with it, so am producing something myself. I will upload the info when it is available.

    • Thanks for the feedback Caroline. I find the same when I use it in presentations. In fact, if you hve any written feedback from students, I’d love you to send it to me if possible.

  2. Tony – I had the same thoughts as you about not wanting to live in certain conditions. And I still know where to go for information to make sure that I won’t have to live an undignified or painful way.

    • You are not alone on this one Tony and i0landa… I feel sure if a referendum was held, there would be a resounding WIN on the side of legalising euthanasia. Of course, every side of politics is too scared to face that possibility as then they’d have to do something about it!!!

  3. Well done Kate….It used to be we all feared the ‘C’ word(cancer) but I would fear the ‘D’ word much more for sure.It creates great fear in thinking of losing oneself. I so wish I had a cure for everybody! Blessings and thank you….Big Hugs…VK

  5. ….Yes Kate that’s exactly how it is, your experience mirrors my own,……I had it all worked out….I would take my own life…..when and how was decided……then I used Adrenalin, and are now enjoying a fairly normal existence……I do not have a problem with dying, I just don’t want to die in agony………this is an extremely well thought out and produced video…..Thank you Kate…
