Yesterday, it was announced in the media I am one of four SA finalists in the Australian Of The Year Awards. This was for me, incredibly humbling, and also incredible to be recognised for my advocacy and activism for people with dementia, both here in Australia and globally. I don’t do this for money, and am almost never paid for what I do. I don’t do it for recognition. I do it with the hope of improving the quality of life and well being of the almost 47 million people with dementia around the world. I am indeed, trying to change the world…
The ceremony to announce the winner of the SA Australian Of The Year is to be held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on the 11th of November.
Later in the day, I received an email with another media release, announcing I was one of two SA finalists in the National Disability Awards, and in some ways, feel this is more important to my work, as it places dementia fully into the disAbility sector. People with dementia, who live with varying and increasing symptoms that cause many disAbilities, deserve the same rights to legislation and the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as every other person with a disAbility. This award, even as a finalist, puts us into this space formally.
The ceremony to announce the winner of the National Disability Award is in Canberra on the 25th November.
To those who nominated me for these awards, I thank you sincerely for your support of me, and your support of my work, and most especially for valuing what I do. I would be amazed and honoured to win either of these awards, but already feel completely humbled to have been nominated at all, and then to be a finalist in both, with an impressive group of amazing Australians.

So true-life is full of surprises(good and bad)!

Kate – I cannot think of anyone more deserving for both awards. You inspire so many, you are a role model, you validate the reality of people living with dementia, and you stand up and fight for what is right.
You are a hero to so many. I am so proud of you, your generous spirit and your selfless journey. You deserve this because you alone are the expert.
I shall definitely be putting it out there to the universe for you to win.
May the force be with you my friend – as always , “Love ya work”.xx

I think my blog is all I will ever have or want as a ‘talk show’ – that way, it allows so many others to talk freely too, without the controls of a media outlet!
ps I love ironing and mopping floors, too much actually, an ex almost- OCD with a EX-super tidy house!
