A love affair, or a hate affair?

Description of image: Frustrated and overworked businessman burying his head uner a laptop computer asking for help. Ps. It reminds me of myself, frequently asking for HELP for how to use, or stop using AT, AI or DT!!!

Assisted technology (AT), Artifical Intelligence (AI) and Digital Technology (DT), have meant there is an increasing ‘digitisation’ of our world. It is sometimes confronting, it is often helpful, and there are many positives and negatives. I hear people telling me the love AT, and many also tell me they hate it!

Many also describe it as the 21st century version of an online ‘Big Brother’. Ironically, most people use iPhones, so whether they love or hate it, they use AI, AT and DT often.

From using things such as the GPS in your car or on your phone instead of a physical map or street directory, to using ChatGPT to write blogs and articles, or predictive text, or asking siri to text or call someone, or turn on your music, it has become invasive, and pervasive, and for many of us, also helpful.

Dictionary.com says: digital technology is the branch of scientific or engineering knowledge that deals with the creation and practical use of digital or computerized devices, methods, systems, etc. They are a digital device, method, system, etc., created by using this knowledge (the invention of the internet and other digital technologies).

Digital technologies are electronic tools, systems, devices and resources that generate, store or process data. Well known examples include social media, online games, multimedia and mobile phones.

Wikpedia defines AT and AI as follows:

Assistive technology (AT) is a term for assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and the elderly. Disabled people often have difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADLs) independently, or even with assistance. ADLs are self-care activities that include toileting, mobility (ambulation), eating, bathing, dressing, grooming, and personal device care. Assistive technology can ameliorate the effects of disabilities that limit the ability to perform ADLs. Assistive technology promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to, or changing methods of interacting with, the technology needed to accomplish such tasks.

Artificial intelligence (AI), in its broadest sense, is intelligence exhibited by machines, particularly computer systems. It is a field of research in computer science that develops and studies methods and software that enable machines to perceive their environment and use learning and intelligence to take actions that maximize their chances of achieving defined goals.

  1. I have a love hate technology, I hate that it is breaking down family units, coming in between relationships. I believe it has good and bad and the trick is to use it so it is a good addition or tool, unfortunately it has created a whole new type of addictions. It is in my opinion is taking people’s human connections away, creating a more singular focus rather than a community focus, whether that be family, community we live etc. Truthfully as much as I like some of the good, it terrifies me.
