To Whom I May Concern: a play about dementia

To whom I may concern “The Real World of Alzheimer’s”

Published on Mar 22, 2013

To Whom I May Concern is an interactive theatre project, where the stories of people with dementia are respectfully gathered and become the basis for the script of a play. The play is performed by a group of people with dementia, typically the same people from whom the stories originated.

The play, usually performed live, provides a forum for people with dementia to communicate their thoughts, ideas, feelings and frustrations to the audience in an informal setting. A “Talk Back” session follows, which allows two-way communication between the cast and the audience to talk about what they just experienced.

This recording shows the first online performance of To Whom I May Concern, and was done in Google Hangouts with each cast member playing their part from their own computers. Cast members are from various locations in the USA. Stories were also gathered from this same group via meetings in Google Hangouts, email, and the telephone. During this play, the group create a blog called “The Real World of Alzheimer’s” and the actual blog is available at http://www.realworldofalzheimers.com

To Whom I May Concern is the brainchild of Maureen Matthews, and the website is http://www.towhomimayconcern.org.
The online performance was a joint effort of To Whom I May Concern and Mindset Memory Centre (www.mindsetmemory.com). It premiered on March 27, 2013 during A Meeting of the Minds, a monthly webinar for people with dementia and others meeting the challenges of dementia.

Facilitated by Laura Bowley and Richard Taylor, the website is http://www.meeting-minds.com

  1. Kate this is brilliant. This is what they should play not so called experts and ‘carers’ telling people they know everything. Excellent it would be good if these people were at ADI. No wonder people living with Dementia get so annoyed at all of the so called experts. Love you xxx
